Hardwood flooring with a polyurethane finish, can be first
vacuumed and then mopped with a solution of water and a water-based hardwood
flooring cleaner and simply left to dry. If shellac, varnish, or lacquer is on
its surface it should have a solvent-based liquid cleaner for wooden flooring
applied to it in the direction of its grain using a dry wax applicator tool.
The surface must then be gone over with a cloth and once dry, polished with a
floor polishing machine.
With laminate flooring, it is important not to soak it or it
may cause swelling in the seams and damage. First it should be completely
swept, then soaking the cloth in a mixture of one cup vinegar to one gallon of
water and thoroughly wringing it out, wipe each section of flooring, rinsing as
necessary. The floor can then air dry.
Vinyl can stain easily because it is porous, so it is
important to wipe up spills early on to avoid permanent marks. To clean vinyl,
one must first sweep the surface with a broom, then use a solution of water and
a mild dish detergent or a no-rinse floor cleaner orchard park on a mop or soft cloth. If there
are any stubborn marks, a rubber bristled brush can be used to scour them off.
