The other side of the wall
A young woman was very proud of the flowers in her garden.
Her grandmother had taught her to love and care for the flowers as if they were her own children.
One day the young woman saw a beautiful flowering tree in a catalog and immediately ordered it.
She planted it at the base of a stone wall in the corner of her garden, and spent months caring for it.
Ultimately it grew, sprouting green leafy vines that climbed the wall, but to her disappointment no flowers bloomed.
One morning the woman stood in her garden and wondered whether she should just cut down the tree and start over with something new.
Then she heard a voice from over the wall.
“Yoo-hoo! I just wanted to thank you for the beautiful flowers! I’ve enjoyed them so much!”
Puzzled, the young woman went next door. Her neighbor, an elderly woman, opened the garden gate and showed her into the backyard.
To her surprise, the young woman saw that her tree had bloomed, but only on the vines that had crept over the wall into her neighbor’s yard.
Her work hadn’t been in vain, and it had given her neighbor so much pleasure that she decided never to cut the tree down.
